Discard those germs you keep picking up.
One of the best things you can do to stay healthy is get in the habit of washing your hands more often. Of course after using the toilet and before eating, but how about also as one of the things you do when you arrive home or at work? (I refer to this as "washing off the Muni").
Want to wash effectively? Start following this advice from my doctors.
Increased handwashing as described at your Kaiser link leads to some unintended consquences. The CDC has put out new guidelines due to problems with drying and cracking from multiple washings. Any compromise of the skin surface(chapping, dermatitis, etc) in the skin are a big risk for bugs transmitted by contact. CDC advocates sanitizers for most contact and to use handwashing only when hands have been soiled.

Oo, thanks for the extra information, John!
Frankly, I still consider riding public transit without gloves as “soiling”, but fortunately, that’s just twice a day.
